Today is Career Day.
Organized and sponsored by the Career Development Center for the past 23 years, this day brings together more than 100 different corporations and 250 representatives to offer Cal State Long Beach students job opportunities that are available.
One of the many companies attending Career Day is 20th Century Insurance Co.
Joseph Tomcyk, employment interview senior at 20th Century, said the company looks for people who can organize and plan their time well.
"We’re looking for people who not only have a bachelor’s degree, but can demonstrate problem-solving skills and communicate well with people," Tomcyk said.
Carol Sylvester, district manager of B. Dalton bookstores, looks for potential employees, who do not need to have a degree, to fill all levels of marketing.
"We look for people who love to read and who enjoy books," Sylvester said. "We have people of various educational backgrounds and it makes for a very challenging environment."
The Monterey Institute of International Studies will also be in attendance. This graduate school has approximately 750 students from 50 different countries, according to Berta Aug, director of recruiting and admission.
"We’ll be talking about our graduate program and about international careers," Aug said.
Some of the programs that the institute offers are careers in international business, political studies, environment policy and translating and interpretation.
For students who are preparing to take an admissions or board test, Kaplan Educational Center can answer questions at Career Day.
"We help students prepare for tests like the LSAT, SAT and GMAT," Temple Woolly, staff member of the center, said.
Hal Schaffer, a counselor for the Career Development Center and organizer of Career Day, explained that this is the largest career networking event held by the center every year.
"For the most part, corporations are looking to hire graduates and talking to students," Schaffer said. "The goal of Career Day is a time when students can come out and ask these companies questions."
