Twenty-seven freshmen have signed up for the Cal State Long Beach Four-Year Pledge, which promises graduation from college in only four years.

According to CSULB's fall 1995 Schedule of Classes, only 36.6 percent of regularly admitted full-time freshmen earned a bachelor's degree by spring 1994, or six years after entering CSULB.

With the Four-Year Pledge, participating students will receive guidance and direction to achieve timely graduation.

The 27 freshmen, who will receive priority registration for the spring 1996 semester, will undergo personal advising from the Academic Advising Center.

"Right now all the students have returned their copies of the pledge, and we are ready to start advising to get them ready for the spring semester," said center Director Marilee Samuelson.

The students include two each from the Colleges of the Arts and Liberal Arts; three each from the Colleges of Business Administration and Engineering; nine from the College of Natural Sciences, five from the College of Health and Human Services and three undeclared majors.

The students will be expected to complete at least 31 units each academic year, while engineering majors must complete 34 units.

The university, in turn, promises to develop a program to permit participating students to complete their degrees within four years.

Should the university fail in this, President Robert Maxson has promised that students participating in the program will not be required to pay tuition or fees for required courses taken after the end of the fourth year of the student's baccalaureate program.
