The campus phone and voice-mail system was back up and running Wednesday after a flood caused the systems to go down Oct 15.

But Network and Telecommunications Services officials said some people may still experience problems.

"The system is back up but still unstable," said Director Mary Ann Dase.

The system is under evaluation by technicians from Ericsson, the company from which the university purchased the phone system and Phoneby, the company in charge of the campus voice-mail system.

Officials said the system should now be stabilized.

Technicians were able to recover messages that were left on voice-mail boxes up to 3 p.m. Oct. 15, the time the system went down, and are trying to incorporate those messages into the new system.

"Stabilizing the systems will be the next stage the technicians are working on," Dase said.

The phone problems occurred Oct. 15 after water from a burst pipe flooded the basement of Liberal Arts Building 3.

According to police reports, about four inches of water drained into the basement. The cause was reported to be a burst in a back-flow device in the boiler room.

Last Monday and Tuesday, many departments and organizations on campus were still without voice-mail facilities and some areas had no phone use at all.

University Police, who lost their emergency phones Monday and Tuesday night due to repairs, set up two additional phone numbers in order to facilitate calls and send out extra officers to patrol the campus.
