The Long Beach City Council Tuesday unanimously approved a Cal State Long Beach plan for on-campus housing for CSULB fraternities and sororities.

"We had asked the City Council if they could help us get Greek Row on campus," said CSULB President Robert Maxson. "They agreed to help us find the way."

Vice Mayor Douglas Drummond of the 3rd District supported the council vote.

He said that he has several off-campus fraternity houses in his district that caused noise problems with neighbors.

"By including them on campus there's no problem at all," he said.

The council also reimbursed $63,618 in federal Office of Economic Adjustment funds to CSULB.

The money will go for a feasibility study conducted by the university over the proposed University Research and Training Park on the former Long Beach Naval Shipyard.

President Clinton on Sept. 28 approved the transfer of 32 acres of the former shipyard for the proposed research park at no cost to the university.

The research plant would be used primarily by the engineering department.
