The Associated Students Senate approved a new preliminary moniker for Cal State Long Beach and funding for several major events in The Pyramid at its sixth regular meeting Wednesday in the Senate chambers.

The Senate approved changing the university's name to Long Beach State University.

The resolution would require approval by the Academic Senate and Alumni Association before going into effect.

The school's athletic department has long used the LBSU name to distinguish themselves from other Cal State University schools. The resolution passed Wednesday would apply that name to the entire campus.

"I think this needs to be done so that we are unified," Sen.-at-large Naomi Rodriguez said.

The panel also approved, on its first reading, a $35,000 transfer of funds for the Pyramid Entertainment Group. The group's goal is to provide entertainment programs in CSULB's newest venues while generating revenue for Associated Students Inc.

PEG has stated plans to sponsor five major events for the 1995- 96 school year, including a Lollapalooza-style alternative-music festival in April.

A.S. President Carl Kemp announced in a written report that CSULB will withdraw from the California State Students Association. He said that CSULB would not receive adequate representation as the second largest school in the CSU system.

The Senate installed four new members, Sen.-at-large Bita Sharif, Sen.-at-large Amy Walsh, Brandi Jones, senator for the College of Education and Mariela Diaz-Brown, senator for the College of Engineering .

The panel also elected Scott Honn and Larry Walker as senators for the College of Health and Human Services and appointed Mahta Sharif as public-relations commissioner.
