The business of filling vacancies once again dominated the Associated Students Senate's meeting Wednesday, with the election of five senators and the appointment of a commissioner.

Laura Dickens was appointed to sports and spirit commissioner. She said that homecoming was her main agenda and added that the fact that Cal State Long Beach was a commuter school was no excuse for poor spirit.

"I want to see students involved in the school and showing up at games," she said.

Susan Funk was elected senator from the College of the Arts. "I feel very lucky to be able to make an impact here," she said.

Also elected were Jeff White to senator from the College of Natural Sciences and Mariela Diaz-Brown to senator from the College of Engineering.

The highlight of the election of a senator-at-large came when Paras Bengco, senator from the College of Business Administration, asked candidate Ken Husting, "If you could be an animal which would you be?" Husting replied that he would be a bald eagle.

The board finally selected Bita Sharif as the newest senator-atlarge.

A.S. President Carl Kemp handed out incense during his report to "spread the scent [of ideas] around campus," he said. "If you don't light it, only your pocket of campus will smell good," he said.

Kemp announced his appointments of Ian Coleman, Ernesto Solis and Michael Barrett to the President's Advisory Council.

He also reported that he had polled several students, staff and faculty members and that they supported re-naming the school Long Beach State University.

Kemp also announced that his register-first, pay-later policy was coming into fruition.

Continuing students will be able to register for classes without paying first and will be able to pay for their tuition in four installments beginning in spring 1996.
