The MTV Love Van made an appearance at Cal State Long Beach Wednesday as part of a recruitment effort for the channel's prime-time quiz show "Singled Out."
Zachary Slater, special events coordinator for MTV, spent the morning harnessing the willing volunteers. "We thought we'd come down here and see what Cal State Long Beach is all about," he said.
The show is open to anyone 18 to 25 years old who is willing to appear on MTV's second-highest rated show.
"We don't discriminate on looks, race or anything. We just want people that are outgoing," Slater said.
CSULB student Joann Palacio was invited to audition to be a "picker," a job that would require her to select a date from 50 salivating guys.
"I watch it and it looks like fun," Palacio said. "I want to know what they do off camera. I just want to see if they do crazier stuff and don't show it on television."
Jenny McDonald signed up after watching the show with her roommate the night before.
"My roommate said she can't believe people go on there, but I think it would be kind of cool," she said.
Lenny Constanza signed up because he said he wants to meet some girls. He's also a huge fan of the show, he said.
"It's really fun, very interesting and there's some nice-looking girls on there," Constanza said.
Students who wish to appear as contestants are invited to call MTV at (818) 752-7087 for information.
Computer fans can go on-line with "Singled Out." America Online subscribers can look under the category "Games and Entertainment" and select "The Tube," and then select "MTV." Once there, they can fill out questionnaires to appear on the show or talk with Chris, the flamboyant host of the show.
