Agency to give out 12 fellowships

Twelve fellowships by the U.S. Department of Energy will be
awarded for three years of full-time study toward a
doctoral in an area related to manufacturing large scale systems and
integration of product design with manufacturing
processes.
Applicants must have a master's degree by the beginning of
the fall 1996 term or have been admitted to a doctoral
program prior to the fall 1996 term.
Applicants must also intend to work toward a doctoral degree
at an academic institution that offers a such a degree
program. They must also be U.S. citizens or permanent resident
alien. The application deadline is Dec. 1.
In addition, the National Research Council plans to award about
20 Ford Foundation postdoctoral fellowships for
minorities selected from among recent doctoral recipients who show
the greatest promise of future achievement in
academic research and scholarship in higher education.
This fellowship program is open to U.S. citizens who are
members of designated minority groups and who are
engaged in or planning a career in teaching and research.
Awards will be made in the behavioral and social sciences,
humanities, engineering, mathematics, physical sciences,
and life sciences. The deadline for submission of applications is Jan.
5, 1996.
The Research Council will also offer about 50 three-year pre-
doctoral fellowships and 20 one-year dissertation
fellowships to designated minority groups.
Citizens of the United States who are members of one of these
designated minority groups and who are working
toward or planning a doctoral degree, may apply.
Pre-doctoral fellowships are intended for beginning graduate
students and all applicants must have their Graduate
Record Examinations General Test scores for tests taken since Oct. 1,
1990.
Dissertation fellowship applicants must have completed all
requirements for the doctoral degrees except for the
writing and defense of the dissertation by Feb. 14, 1996.
The deadline for entering the fellowship competition is Nov. 3,
1995.
