The Cal State Long Beach Men's Basketball team picked up its first victory of the year by blowing out Cal State Hayward 101-52 in its home opener at The Pyramid.
The 49ers played a flawless game after getting off to a late start. The game resembled an NBA all-star game as the crowd cheered on break away dunks by Eric Brown and Rasul Salahuddin.
The one-sided game even dimmed the spirits of 49er fans whose early enthusiasm dwindled as the 49ers built on their enormous lead.
During the first half, the Pioneers were stuck at four points for nearly an eternity. It got so ugly that 49er fans actually started cheering for the opposition to make a few baskets.
The 49ers won every aspect of the game. The 49ers out rebounded (60-39) and had more assists (29-14) than the Pioneers.
The 49ers shot 60 percent from the field in the first half, while the Pioneers shot a only 19 percent, helping the 49ers build a 32-point half-time lead.
All twelve 49ers who played in the game scored at least one field goal. But it seemed like an all out sophomore show by the 49ers as sophomore sensation guard James Cotton lead the way with 23 points in only 19 minutes of play. Sophomore Akeli Jackson added 14 points and 6 rebounds and sophomore Marcus Johnson had 9 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 block shoots.
