Cal State Long Beach offers 122 degrees, 50 minors, 55 certificate programs and 35 credential programs for the 1995-96 academic year.
New majors and minors recently approved and now available include a minor in international studies, a bachelor of science degree in aerospace engineering and a bachelor of science degree in physical education, with an option in exercise science.
The home economics department recently was approved to change its degree title from degrees in home economics to degrees in family and consumer sciences.
The criminal justice department has requested to discontinue its options in corrections, law enforcement and security administration.
"The change is to make a more comprehensive core so the students will take classes in all the areas of criminal justice and have a better foundation," said Judi Kaci, a criminal justice professor and undergraduate adviser.
The Academic Senate will vote on that matter Dec. 9. To add or discontinue options, to convert from tracks to options, or to change a degree title, a department must make a formal request to the Academic Senate.
New program proposals fall into two categories, those that must be approved off-campus and those that may be approved by CSULB President Robert Maxson, said Mary McGraa, secretary of the Academic Senate.
For an undergraduate degree, a petition must go to the Planning and Education Council of the Academic Senate. If a graduate degree is involved, it goes to the Academic Senate Graduate Council.
If a request is approved, the respective council refers it to the Academic Senate. Once approved and reviewed by the Academic Senate, the request goes to the president for approval.
For proposals that must be approved off-campus, a new degree program proposal goes to the Chancellor's Office.
A new program is implemented when the president, having received approval from the chancellor, determines that the resources exist to run the program.
