Sylvia Maxson, Cal State Long Beach teacher-education professor, will speak about equity of education at the university level during a membership drive for the American Association of University Women on Saturday.

The meeting will take place at 10 a.m. in the President's Room of the University Student Union. Registration for the program will begin at 9:30 a.m.

The membership drive will highlight aspects for programs in the upcoming year. The first program in October will cover issues of diversity.

"We support equity and education for women and girls," said Deloris Mayuga, co-president of the AAUW. "Each month our program is designed to educate our members on equity and education issues. Four teachers of various ethnic backgrounds will give perspectives on how diversity enhances perspective," Mayuga said.

The AAUW is involved in fund raising activities throughout the year. "Last year we gave seven Junior Outstanding Women's Awards, with a focus on women in majors that are under represented by women at CSULB," Mayuga said.

At the national level, the organization distributes endowments and grants for women to continue their education for advanced degrees.

"AAUW has open membership to anyone attending the university and regular membership is open to all college graduates," said Judith Kaho, membership vice president.

There is no cost to attend the membership drive, but the cost for membership covering all three levels Ñ national, state and local Ñ is $30 for one year.
