Reason and brevity were the themes for the semester's second Associated Students Senate meeting Wednesday as the Senate tore through business and received a supportive speech from Cal State Long Beach President Robert Maxson.
"Just let us reason together" was the invocation from Sen. David Krapf of the College of Liberal Arts, quoting former President Lyndon Johnson .
Maxson voiced strong support for the senators when addressing the forum during the student opinion period.
"I want you to know how much I admire and respect you for doing what you do. You put your money where your mouth is," he said.
The call for new senators once again went out as two new openings were announced. Another senator-at-large is sought, as well as a senator for the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics.
Interested students have three weeks from the date of the announcement to submit applications.
A.S. Senate President Carl Kemp made his own call for reason with an anonymous quote he used to open his report.
"Those who do not reason are bigots, those who cannot reason are fools, those who dare not reason are slaves," Kemp said.
Kemp announced progress on his drive for a 24-hour library, announcing that University Library's computer lab will now be open until 2 a.m. during the week . He added that the University Police will regularly patrol the area during late hours.
The late hours, Kemp explained, will last only as long as students are using the services. He cited a $27,000 cost for the additional library hours alone.
"If it is used this semester then we will see it next semester," Kemp said.
The Senate appointed Deneke Burford as legal aid commissioner, Nicole Maclin as internal aide commissioner, and Francisco Delgado as lectures and forums commissioner. The appointment of Christopher Sanco to election commissioner was postponed one week .
