Pyramid leaks reportedly plugged

The cause of the roof leaks that have plagued the Cal State Long Beach Pyramid since its completion in late 1994 has been determined, according to Bill Husack, Executive Director of the 49'er Athletic Association.

No one in the Cal State Long Beach athletic department could say Monday what the cause of the leaks is.

But Nielsen Construction, the contractor in charge of the construction of The Pyramid, apparently now has a solution, and repairs will be made in time for the first men's basketball game, according to Husack.

"They have found the source of the leaks," reported Husack, adding that repairs are "mostly" completed.

"It's a matter of scheduling the work and I believe that has been completed."

The greatest concern is damage to the hardwood floors of the basketball court. Minor damage was reported following previous rains.

The University and the athletic department have yet to officially accept the Pyramid, citing the leaky roof as a problem that must be resolved before taking possession. That leaves the building under the control of the contractor pending completion of the necessary repairs.

Nielsen Construction has worked all summer to determine the cause of the leaks.

Despite the problems, the the athletic department plans several new additions for the 95/96 season.

Much of the bench seating has been replaced by more-comfortable chairs. Other benches will have seat-style backs. The concession stands will be completed in time for the basketball season.

New championship banners and flags will be up. Instead of traditional cloth, the Pyramid will sport specially-designed 3-D flags and banners constructed of metal.

CSULB's five retired jerseys, three in volleyball and two in basketball, will be on display.

On September 5 , a campus health club will open at the blue entrance of The Pyramid. The club will offer free use for one month to CSULB students to promote awareness of the club and attract membership.

No date has been determined for final approval of the Pyramid's elusive liquor license, however. According to Bill Grebe, Director of Concessions for the 49'er Shops, a hearing must be held in Sacramento that has yet to be scheduled.
