Body art takes over The Queen Mary

Tattoo • The Queen Mary was overrun with cars, bikes and tattoo lovers of all shapes and sizes this past June 23 through 25 for the annual Long Beach Tattoo Convention. Brigid McGuire / Summer Forty-Niner

News

  • Manarino calls it a career after 23 years
Pete Manarino will be found at Long Beach State softball games next season, but for the first time in 23 years Manarino will be in the stands, not in the dugout.
  • CSULB gets more money for campus
The Cal State Long Beach budget increase significantly increase in the next year, which means more money for each of the university’s departments.

Opinion

  • Our view: Flag burning law rightfully defeated
Freedom of speech is one of the most treasured and often-used amendments in the Constitution and arguably, it is the most important. It has contributed to the marketplace of ideas, ensuring everyone, regardless of status or point of view, has the opportunity to make their opinions and ideas known (even if their ideas directly contradict societal norms).

  • Respect the elderly and they will do the same
I recently moved back home for the summer to find my world altered by a new addition: my grandmother. My grandma moved into my parents’ home when I moved into the dorms last August, and I did not realize until recently how much my family’s life was affected by this change.

Diversions

  • Music is not the only star in rock group Big Japan
Nathaniel Castro is missing one thing in common with two of his band members - he has never been on an episode of FOX’s hit show “The OC.” The Northern California singer and songwriter is the centerpiece of Los Angeles indie band Big Japan, but is not its main attraction.
  • A night filled with booze, broken glass and the Bronx
In a dirty, makeshift patio, the lead singer Matt Caughthran for the Los Angeles group the Bronx, sat in an old lawn chair and used an egg crate for a footstool. He looked calm as his tattooed arms rested across his chest and his drummer Jorma Vik sat to his left.
  • It's a bird, it's a plane, it's a sequel
OK people; let me give it to you straight. “Superman Returns” is really, really good, which means you should go see it. Right now.

Sports
  • Long Beach conquers first cup
For the first time in school history, Long Beach State was awarded the Big West Conference Commissioner’s Cup on June 7 for its outstanding athletic performance during the 2005-2006 school year.
