Monkey business

Macroevolution
• Students on their way to class are surprised to see a man in a monkey suit trying to get their attention. Cal State University Long Beach alumnus John Lockmer, represented “Christian Students Unit” in search of a teacher to present an argument for Macroevolution. “I’m offering to students $50 if they can find an instructor who’s willing to present an argument for macroevolution,” he said. “We’ll provide a speaker that will present the intelligent design theory, and we’ll give that teacher $100. We’ll even provide a room, audience and publicity, but we’ve tried for three years and haven’t found a teacher to take up that offer.” Erika Jones / Online Forty-niners

News

  • Sheriff’s report on kidnapping suspect inaccurate
The kidnapping suspect University Police apprehended May 3 will face charges in Long Beach today.

  • Local pubs have dirty secrets
When someone orders a dirty martini from his or her favorite bar, they usually don’t assume it could actually be dirty. Many people have heard about restaurants that operate in unsanitary conditions or serve food that could be hazardous to people’s health, but do they ever stop to think about the cleanliness of the bar they drink at?

  • Senators discuss experiences
For an Associated Students Senate sometimes criticized and sometimes praised by Cal State Long Beach students, senators took it upon themselves to reflect, good and bad, on their experiences at their final meeting Wednesday.

  • Undocumented immigrant tackles scholastic woes
On an ordinary spring weekday, Cal State Long Beach student Israel Agustin walks through the campus just like any other student.

  • Stress stinks, relaxation works
As the semester comes to a close, only one thing separates students from the shackles of college curriculum and the lazy days of sun and surf.

Opinion

  • Our View: Apathy toward homeless unacceptable
The issue of homelessness is, for many people, a moot point. Yes, there are homeless people, but what are we supposed to do about it? Haven’t there always been homeless people? What’s new?

Sports

  • Professional and college sports disappoint L.A. fans
It has definitely been a very disappointing year for Los Angles sports fans, and it’s all because of the three major professional sports, including college.

  • Summer sports options ease off season pain
Summer means a lot of things to a lot of people. To Southern Californians, the most substantial thing the season represents is a suffocating heat, one that lasts for weeks and weeks–a heat that makes us forget about the damp spring months we were glad to be rid of and long for a cool fall and the daylight savings time that it will bring. Of course, this parching heat brings a drought of another type as well; mainstream professional sports all but grind to a halt under the blazing sun.

  • Honors, awards all around for the Dirtbag squad
Long Beach State pitcher Andrew Carpenter (7-2, 2.81 ERA) earned his fourth Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week honors for his complete-game six-hit shutout against the Cal Poly Mustangs Saturday. It was Andrew’s fifth complete game and seventh win of the season.

  • Softball conference standings remain close until the end
After taking two out of three games at UC Davis last weekend, the 49er women’s softball team will play its last regular season series against the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos this weekend. The women hold a record of 28-19 and 11-4 in the Big West Conference.
