News

  • Fee increases to help close salary lag
The California State University student fee is projected to increase 10 percent every year until at least 2011/12.

  • Referendum heightens long standing newspaper rivalry
There has been an ongoing rivalry between the Daily Forty-Niner and the Long Beach Union Weekly for decades. However, it has gained momentum in recent months in the midst of an attempt by the Daily Forty-Niner, in collaboration with Dig magazine, to get a referendum passed that would increase student fees by $4 in order to help fund the two publications.

Opinion

  • Our View: Wal-Mart feud with Frenchman dumb
The controversial mega store Wal-Mart, known to many as either a benefactor to the masses, bringing people cheap and necessary goods, or an unethical, socially irresponsible corporation, may soon have another addition to its numerous identities: The sole proprietor of the famous yellow smiley face.

  • Student’s car hit by DUI driver, heed advice
Whether they get pulled over for drinking and driving or slammed by someone driving under the influence, some people just don’t think twice about it until it actually happens to them. Either way, it’s not cool.

Diversions

  • Symphony bands perform last concert of the year
In their last performance of the year, Cal State Long Beach’s Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band gave an outstanding performance, incorporating music from different genres and ending the school year with a bang Thursday in the Gerald R. Daniel Recital Hall.

  • Goo Goo Dolls new album, ‘Let Love In,’ tribute to home
When it came time for Goo Goo Dolls front man John Rzeznik to start writing the band’s eighth album, he did the opposite of what most artists do. Instead of going into the recording studio he packed up and went home.

Sports

  • De La Hoya strikes again
Returning from a nearly two-year layoff, Oscar De La Hoya beat the arrogance out of Ricardo Mayorga and topped off a pugnacious victory with a fierce sixth round TKO to win a junior middleweight title Saturday night before a thunderous crowd of 13,076 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
