The rivalry between Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton was in full swing
as the Dirtbags fell to the Titans Friday and Saturday. The No. 4-ranked Titans
beat the Dirtbags 2-1 in 11 innings Friday and 7-4 Saturday. This is the sixth
loss in a row for the Dirtbags, dropping their record to 12-14.
Jared Hughes started Friday and pitched a no-hitter through four and one-third
innings, eventually giving up a single to Titan Evan MacArthur. Hughes went
nine innings and was relieved by Vance Worley. Hughes hit his tenth batter
of the season, which ties the school record with Jered Weaver at 29. The bases
were loaded for the Titans in the first with an error by Espinosa, hit batter
and walk by Hughes, but a ground ball to second got the Dirtbags out of the
inning.
Wes Roemer, who has not walked a batter in over 60 innings, started for the
Titans and pitched eight innings, only giving up one run on three hits. In
the fifth inning a double by Brandon Godfrey started the momentum for the Dirtbags
as they took the lead 1-0. The Titans retaliated in the sixth as Brett Pill
shot a homerun over the left-center field wall to even the score.
Saturday’s battle ended poorly for LBSU with a 7-4 loss after Head Coach
Mike Weathers was ejected from the game in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Andrew Carpenter started on the mound for the Dirtbags, going five and two-thirds
innings allowing eight hits and six run, five of them earned. Carpenter was
a bit wild hitting two batters and giving up two walks, but tallied six strikeouts
before being relieved by Andrew Liebel.
An RBI single by Chuck Sindlinger and a two-run homerun by Evan Longoria in
the third boosted the Dirtbags to 4-3. Shane Peterson has started just 13 times
this season for the Dirtbags, but had his seventh multiple hit game going 2-for-3.
Fullerton rallied back in the fifth to make the score 5-4 on a two-run single
by Pill. A sacrifice fly in the sixth added another run for the Titans 6-4
lead.
The Dirtbags host UC Irvine at 6:30p.m. Friday at Blair Field to kick-off a
three- games series.
