49ers take the win in afternoon double-header

The Long Beach State women’s softball team went undefeated against Southern Utah University in a doubleheader Wednesday at the 49er Softball Complex.

Pitcher Michelle Turner was the highlight of the first game, striking out nine and allowing only three hits as the 49ers beat the Thunderbirds 5-0.

“ Michelle pitched a very good game,” said Head Coach Pete Manarino. “In softball, these pitchers can throw and throw and throw, and if we thought she was tired, we would have taken her out.”

After an RBI single in the first inning from Lacy Tyler put LBSU on the board, the 49ers opened up their lead in the second inning, scoring three more runs off of opposing pitcher Corie Jensen. A single by Tiffanie Wedell brought in the first run and an RBI double to the left-center fence by Turner brought in the other two.

“ We did a really good job today [offensively],” Manarino said. “We had good at-bats, hit good pitches, manufactured runs and did all the little things that we needed to do at the plate.”

The 49ers’ bats were quieted in the first game by reliever Ashley Christiansen, who only allowed one more run after entering in the fourth inning before holding LBSU scoreless for the rest of the game. The Thunderbirds were never able to build any momentum, however, only getting a runner to third base once and going three-up-and-three-down in four of their seven chances at that.

The two games brought Southern Utah to a 1-8 record and the 49ers to a 6-3 record for the season thus far.
