Setting school records and having fun at the same time is Charles Lewis’ style as part of the track and field team at Long Beach State. He set a school record in the 60 meter (6.90) and tied the school record in the 200 meter (21.47) at the Northern Arizona Quadrangular last weekend.

Lewis was born in Torrance and raised in Carson where he attended Carson High School. He is the youngest in his family and has three older sisters.

Artistic ability and creativity help Lewis excel in his illustration major and also his current position at the Bizz Clothing in Long Beach.

“ I started working there recently,” Lewis said. “I customize shoes and get to be artistic.”

Sports have never been a big part of Lewis’ life, but his passion resides in poetry and drawing. He hopes to one day get a comic book published and maybe turn it into a cartoon series.

While on the track team, Lewis is a model of hard work, but he shows his team it is ok to have fun while you work.

“ When I come out here, I have fun,” Lewis said. “You can’t be serious all the time, but I am serious when I run, and I do that to the best of my ability.”

Running sparked Lewis’ interest in high school and he decided to pursue it as far as he could.

“ Running takes you away a little bit,” Lewis said. “You’re not in this world and you kind of zone out. I get on the track and it’s a natural high.”

“ I like traveling,” Lewis said. “I like going places and I look forward to getting out of the house and staying in a hotel.”

“ When I run, I know nothing about anyone,” Lewis said. “I’m on the track and I will run as hard as I can against anyone.”

Lewis finds support in fellow teammates Robert Nelson, Stevie McBride and Marcus Armstrong on and off the track.

“ I am looking forward for the fantastic four to get back together,” Lewis said.

The team travels to Seattle for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships Feb. 24-25.
