A seventh inning clutch RBI single by Breezy Goad gave the 49er women the go ahead run to win against UC Riverside 4-3 Sunday at the 49er Softball Complex.

It was a weekend of extra innings for the Long Beach State women who hosted the UCR Highlanders Saturday and Sunday.

The Beach played a double-header Saturday with a 10-inning game, eventually winning 2-1. The 49ers had six hits with
Michelle Turner having a two-hit game and being the winning pitcher.

The Beach lost the second game of the double-header 3-1. UCR scored three runs in the first inning, but The Beach did not get on the board until the fourth and never capitalized again, leaving nine on base for the game. LBSU totaled just four hits in the game with one apiece by Jessica Beaver, Turner, Lacy Tyler and Jonae Perez.

Turner started in the circle in Sunday’s game and the Highlanders scored early making it 1-0 in the first inning. The Beach came back in the third when Goad started the inning with a single and Turner followed with another hit. Perez and Brooke LeSage were both hit by pitches in the inning and the women scored two runs to take the lead. Another run came in the fifth when Tiffanie Wedell had an RBI single to increase the lead to 3-1.

Turner was steady until the sixth when she gave up a walk and three singles to allow the Highlanders two runs. LBSU was unable to score in the bottom of the sixth and the game went into extra innings. Turner held the Highlanders in the top of the seventh and The Beach won on Goad’s RBI single 4-3 in the bottom of the inning.

“ We found a way to win,” said Head Coach Pete Manarino. “A good team always finds a way to win. That’s the Long Beach way. Michelle Turner did a great job in keeping us in the game.”

The 49ers play their final home series against Pacific this weekend. The first game of the double-header is 1 p.m. Saturday at the softball complex.
