Big West basketball coverage inadequate, disappointing

Daily Forty-Niner, you have let me down this time. As an avid reader of this school newspaper, I look to it to find interesting articles, what’s happening in the school, and, of course, what is going on in sports. But this time you missed the standard for relaying important school sports news. I disappointed and dismayed.

The Big West Tournament was two weekends ago, a tournament that our basketball teams have been looking forward to this entire season. Where was your coverage of this event? Don’t tell me the little blurb about Saturday night’s game even qualifies as coverage of what the men’s basketball team accomplished.

Where was the mention that our men’s team made it to the championship game after an absence of 11 years? When did you recognize the team for the school and tournament record-breaking 17 three-point shots in one game? How could you fail to mention the three-point shot at the buzzer Friday night that got the guys into the championship game? And the mention of two of our players receiving accolades from the tournament association? Once again, missing.

One of the biggest sports events to happen in one weekend and there was no story. The cheer team, dance team, pep band and many students managed to make it to the game. But a sports reporter? Apparently not. I for one am very proud of our basketball team and I stand alarmed that our very own school newspaper failed to show their support of the men’s team, but instead disguised their fault with a few sentences and a couple of color photos.

— Melissa Jaramillo, senior music and liberal studies major

Editor’s note: The Daily Forty-Niner sent a photographer and a reporter to each game of the tournament; however, the reporter never turned in his story and is not answering his phone. We regret we were unable to run a full-length story about the team’s accomplishments.
