The Beach’s legendary campus niche taken away

Bradley Zint

There’s a scam abound and I for one am not fooled. Our campus has a few memorable little niches, but recently one of those has been taken away from us. It just isn’t right.

I’m referring to “the gap.” No, I’m not talking about the clothing store. I’m talking about the engineering mistake in front of the University Student Union by the West Campus Turnaround.

Everyone knows what the gap is. It’s, well, a gap in-between the pillars that hold up the USU entrance covering. People walk through it to avoid going all the way around. Basically, this little spot is one that a vast majority of the students here pass by or through en route to class.

But now some jerk has placed trashcans on both sides of the gap in an effort to deter lazy students from passing through it. What a load of crap that is.

Apparently “the man” or somebody was pissed that so many students have for so many years glided through the gap. I’m sure many of us have waited in line to get through the gap, even though we could have merely passed around it much quicker than waiting.

The gap was an odd psychological phenomenon on campus that now, due to two trashcans, has been cruelly denied to us. Most of us probably found solace seeing so many people line up in this quirky spot. Most of us probably found solace waiting to pass through it.

Late one night on my way to the University Library I tried to move those trashcans for the good of the student body. I hoped that my late-night efforts could one day bring back this pathetic shortcut.

But I failed miserably. The trashcans were either too heavy or have somehow been implanted on the ground to prevent potential heroes like me.

Oh well. I guess there’s no more gap for The Beach. But I for one will be passing down its legendary campus status. No trashcans will ever allow this campus niche to be forgotten.
