Cell phones usage on shuttles annoying, stop

Allison Baldwin

The campus shuttle system can seem like a godsend to those of us who unfortunately can’t score a parking spot in the far corners of campus. The shuttle can cut a 20-minute walk down to a five-minute ride.

If there is one problem with the shuttle system, it is not the shuttles themselves. The problem is the passengers who show no consideration for fellow riders by talking incessantly on their cell phones.

There are a few choice people who seem to have their cell phones glued to their face. There really is not a problem with being on the phone for a majority of the day as long as it is done when the users are not in a confined space with 20 other people.

Carrying on a loud phone conversation while riding the shuttle — or any form of public transportation for that matter — is just plain rude. It is not OK to force strangers to listen about late night escapades or stressful family situations.

I propose three options to those who are on the phone when that trusty shuttle comes. First, hang up the phone for the five-minute ride and then resume the conversation after exiting the shuttle. If that is not an option, stay on the phone but wait 15 minutes for the next shuttle to come. If waiting for the next shuttle is just not acceptable, then I say it’s time for a nice walk.

That’s plenty of time for a nice long and semi-private conversation.
