Women's health summit host to local organizations

Thank you for the article, “Women’s health summit fosters sex awareness” in the April 24 issue of the Daily Forty-Niner regarding the Long Beach Women’s Health Summit.  I would like to correct and clarify a statement I made in regards to the summit. The quote in the article reads,“There were no agencies or corporations hosting it.”

The summit was an event in which more than 20 local, private and public healthcare, social service agencies and individuals came together in equal partnership to jointly organize and put on the event. These organizations and individuals provided money, in-kind items, work hours and expertise. A few private corporations also provided in-kind donations.

All of these were vital and equally important to the success of the summit.  A more comprehensive list of sponsors, donors and contributors can be found at www.lbwhs.blogspot.com.

CSULB and the Women’s Resource Center, under the leadership of Marcela Chavez, the Director of the Center, hosted the event at the University Student Union. The facility was a unanimous choice of the planning committee due to its location, beauty and the vital role CSULB has within the Long Beach community. I want to express my appreciation and gratitude to Chavez and the university for their generosity, expertise and assistance through the planning and execution of the Summit.

The summit was a fantastic event and success due in part to the expertise and support from Chavez, the staff at the University Student Union and the CSULB staff and students. Thank you for hosting the 2006 Long Beach Women’s Health Summit.

— Jody L. Forter
Chairwoman, Long Beach Women’s Health Summit
