Cal State Long Beach hosted the 16th annual Step Show at The Walter Pyramid
Saturday. The event brought close to 1,500 attendees. Greek organizations from
the National Pan Hellenic Council all showed up to show support and love for
the art of stepping.
Students from Cal State San Francisco, San Diego State, Cal State Fresno, UC
Berkeley and Stanford were in attendance this year to show their skills in
the stomp competition that offered each organization the opportunity to win
scholarship funds and a trophy.
The competition awarded a $2,000 scholarship for one fraternity and one sorority.
Alpha Phi Alpha took home the trophy for best performance for a fraternity
and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. won first place.
Assistant Director of Student Life and Development Brett Waterfield has coordinated
the event for the past five years and is proud to see CSULB hosting the event
again. CSULB’s step show is the longest running step show among all of
the California schools. The event is student-produced and rich in philanthropy
and community.
"
Profits from the show go back into community and leadership development programs," Waterfield
said. "It was a good day and everyone worked real hard to make this
happen, congratulations to all."
Many of the attendees were impressed with the turnout this year. The Walter
Pyramid was packed, and "party walking" went on for hours.
Ashley Stanton, a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, was happy to see her sisters
place third in the competition.
"
We won third place, but all of the teams did their thing," Stanto said. "This
year there were more people here and more teams competing, I am looking forward
to next year’s show."
Mr. Quick was the disc jockey for the event and he kept the crowd hype. The
music varied from new to old school. Being an UC Santa Barbara alumnus and
a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, step shows have become his specialty.
"
The love, the energy, the feeling, the vibe, everybody came out supported
and had a great time," Mr. Quick said.
DJ K-Sly and Armand from 100.3 The Beat hosted the event. The crowd also enjoyed
live performances from the Federation, a new hip-hop group out of the Bay Area.
The event was sponsored by the U.S Army and Stomping on the Yard. Stomping
on the Yard National Step Show Tour is in its third year and will resume next
weekend touring universities all over the United States. The tour serves as
a celebration of leadership, scholarship and showmanship.
Annually, 200 step show tickets that are donated to the inner city youth. The
Boys and Girls Club and the Women’s Shelter are among a few of the recipients. All
profits gained from the show are put back into community and leadership development
programs.
