Students wait their entire college careers to get a chance to put their brainpower
to work. Candice Han was given that opportunity when she finished her final project
last semester and it landed her a job.
Han, a 29-year-old senior journalism major with an emphasis in public relations
at Cal State Long Beach, was given a job after completing an ad campaign for
Gardenburger for her final in journalism professor Matt
Cabott’s public
relations management class.
Han said she received a call a month and a half later.
“
I was really flattered to get that call,” she said.
Westbound Communication Works hired Han for five weeks to produce a campaign
for the Alaskan Brewing Co.
Her primary strategy for the campaign was using MySpace to inform people. MySpace
is popular social networking site, where people can create their own Web page
and look for friends, music and other media in their area. According to recent
studies, MySpace has been growing by about 5 million members a month and currently
has about 47.3 million members.
Han created a MySpace profile and then used the site’s search engine to
look for potential candidates for the Alaskan Brewing Co. campaign. She targeted
10 universities, including CSULB, and sent mass e-mails to people. She was very
successful and is now working on a full ad campaign for Gardenburger.
“
I love it,” Han said about her new job.
Alaskan Brewing Co.’s fliers have been placed all over campus. The company
is accepting applications for a four-week beer promotion program. The job includes
one week in Alaska and a $2,500 paycheck. However, Alaskan Brewing Co. is only
accepting six students out of all 10 universities. For more information visit

Besides working for Westbound, Han also owns her own business, Super Freaks.
Her company focuses on artist development and is currently working to help underprivileged
children unlock their artist talents. After working for years in business management,
Han wanted to finish her education and returned to CSULB to earn her bachelor’s
degree.
In addition to working and going to school, Han is also a disc jockey. She has
performed in venues all over Southern California, including the Knitting Factory.
She hasn’t released a full album yet, but has done a few mix albums. She
has lived in Southern California for many years and currently resides in Huntington
Beach.
Han hopes to continue her work with Super Freaks and promote young artist talent.
