Professor to be remembered

Dr. Xiaolan Bao, a professor of Chinese and Chinese women’s studies at Cal State Long Beach since 1993, died Jan. 22 after a long struggle with cancer.

“ She was great to have around and talk to. She was great help,” said Sharon Sievers, a friend and colleague of Bao, and member of the panel that hired her. “She was in the middle of her career as a scholar and that’s one of the things that make this really hard to deal with.”

Bao published many books and was internationally know for her knowledge in Chinese women’s history.
Lisa Gilpin, a 2002 graduate of CSULB was not only Bao’s student but was also mentored by her.

“ She was my professor but she was more like a friend that really inspired me to be a teacher. She made me a better student, teacher and person,” Gilpin said. “She never thought twice about giving something up for her students.”

In honor of Bao, the history department will host a memorial service 4 to 6 p.m. Feb. 22 at the Faculty Development Center at CSULB.
