Liberal Arts Dean Abrahamse appointed interim provost

President F. King Alexander appointed Dorothy Abrahamse interim provost and senior vice president of Academic Affairs at Cal State Long Beach Tuesday. She will fill the position that will be left vacant once the current provost and vice president of Academic Affairs, Gary Reichard, takes his place as vice chancellor of the California State University system Feb 13.

She will hold the position until a national search is completed for a permanent provost and vice president of Academic Affairs next fall.

The provost acts as the executive vice president of CSULB and function as the university president when he or she is unavailable, according to Reichard. As vice president of Academic Affairs, Abrahamse will control the academic budget as well as allotting resources to each department. She will also have the last word on faculty hiring and granting tenure to current professors.

“ Dorothy Abrahamse is a highly valued scholar-administrator and is well respected by her colleagues throughout our campus and the community,” said President F. King Alexander in a prepared statement. “I believe she has the ability to continue advancing our academic program and mission at CSULB, and I am confident she will serve well in this capacity.”

Abrahamse has been the dean of the College of Liberal Arts since 1992. She has acted as vice president of Academic Affairs once before from 1993-1994.

“ It’s an honor to carry on the wonderful work Gary Reichard has done as provost,” Abrahamse said in a prepared statement. “I want to thank the faculty, staff and associate deans in the College of Liberal Arts for their understanding of my accepting this responsibility and their willingness to make sure that no momentum is lost in current initiatives.”

Abrahamse came to CSULB in 1967, and has been chairwoman of the history department, co-coordinator of women’s studies, and associate dean and dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. She has also served as a board member and president of the Council of Colleges of Arts and Sciences.
