SLD regulates campus recruiters

Cal State Long Beach is a prime location for recruiters and donation seekers, but the university places strict regulations on those who want to approach students.

Faculty, students and campus groups are allowed to seek donations on campus if they follow the proper procedures. Those wishing to solicit on campus must go to the office of Student Life and Development, fill out an application, and choose from a list of available locations. While there are many areas available free of charge, the busiest locations on campus—the University Student Union and the 49er Shops—require campus-groups to pay a fee.

“ The Union and the 49er shops are by far the most popular [locations],” said Associate Vice President and Dean of Students Mike Hostetler.

“ Those are the places where most students congregate, especially around noontime.”

Groups applying to use the campus must tell SLD their purpose, where they plan to go on campus and how long they intend to stay. People requesting donations are only placed in locations where they will not create congestion or disturb nearby classrooms with excess noise.

Hostetler said providing the opportunity for people to collect for causes helps other people and encourages students to care about others. Students interested in collecting for a good cause should talk to SLD.

Problems arise when donation seekers are overly zealous with students. Some students feel harassed.

Hostetler said students feeling harassed by solicitors should report their problems to SLD.
