Senate passes resolutions, delays judiciary interview

In its first meeting of the semester, the Associated Students Senate passed four resolutions and delayed appointing the chief justice of the Judiciary until next week.

ASI Vice President Hironao Okahana presented a typed question-and-answer session with potential chief justice Nicholas Mokhlessin to the senators in the hope of saving Mokhlessin from facing redundant questions.

Some senators didn’t feel comfortable with just a questionnaire.

“I respect [the effort], but it’s a difference of philosophies,” said Sen. Amin Km, College of Natural Science and Mathematics. “It’s getting to know that person who you’ll be working with.”

Okahana decided to delay the resolution until Mokhlessin could introduce himself to the senators next week.
Okahana also received word last week that Sen. Heidi Chavez, College of Health and Human Services, resigned for personal reasons.

Though a recreation center referendum will not be on the spring ballot, the record amount of responses to the electronic survey captured the attention of the Senate, which has decided to explore the method for general elections.

The Senate unanimously approved a resolution advising ASI Executive Director Richard Haller to study the physical and financial feasibility of electronic voting on all general elections on campus.

Senators also unanimously passed a resolution explicitly relieving ASI of liability for funds given to on-campus clubs and organizations, an important change following the California State University’s prohibition of alcohol at university functions.

The Senate’s last piece of legislation was unanimously passing a resolution stating the Academic Senate’s power to appoint the faculty representative to the Recreational Sports Advisory Board.

Earlier in the meeting, each senator introduced him or herself to CSULB’s new president, F. King Alexander, who called himself the “newest freshman” on campus.

The Senate meets every Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. in the Senate chambers, USU-217.
