University Police apprehended a man suspected of attempting to kidnap a Cal State Long Beach student May 3 after he was spotted on campus, but county authorities released him less than a day later.

Winston Wynne Cummings Jr., 21, was seen running southbound near the fountain in front of Brotman Hall at 4:58 p.m. May 3. After a pursuit, three officers apprehended Cummings by the University Student Union. According to a detective with the UP, Cummings was booked at Long Beach City Jail for attempted kidnapping and the police department held him under $100,000 bail.

According to the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department Inmate Information Center, Cummings, who closely matched the descriptions given by witnesses of the attempted kidnapping April 16, was released at 1 p.m. May 4. The information center said the felony charge of attempted kidnapping was dropped and that, as of 3:47 p.m. Tuesday, he will not have to stand trial.
