UP has no leads on assault suspect

Campus police are still searching for a man who assaulted a female Cal State Long Beach student in a West Campus parking lot Wednesday. University Police released a statement Thursday notifying students of an assault that occurred Wednesday night.

According to the crime bulletin, which was posted in buildings and on campus shuttles, a female subject was assaulted while walking through Lot 16 at about 5 p.m. Her attacker was described as a toned black male who appeared to be between 20 and 25 years old. The suspect was dressed in black with white sneakers and wire-rimmed reading glasses. Another female student reported a suspicious man fitting the description near the College of Business Administration building and the Parking Structure.

A police report written at 5:29 p.m. Wednesday listed the attack as an attempted kidnapping. Police Captain Stan Skipworth insisted the attack was not an attempted rape, which many people on campus have been calling it.

Skipworth said the police are getting a number of calls from people responding to the posted signs and are working with everything they have available. He would not release more details of the attack because the case is still being investigated.

He said UP is available 24-7, 365 days a week and responds to all calls.

Skipworth said UP sent copies of the crime report to a number of local agencies in Long Beach and in the South Bay.

“ It’s common practice [to send out bulletins] with an event of this kind,” Skipworth said.

Skipworth said he is not aware of similar incidents occurring on campus this year or last year, and he said taking measures to be safe on campus is a good practice.

“ It’s not just limited to women but to anybody,” Skipworth said.

Stay Safe on Campus
• Always be aware of your surroundings
• Know where you are going
• Do not wander around aimlessly, and do not appear disoriented or lost
• Travel in groups when possible, especially in the evening
• Attend personal safety programming put on by University Police prior to each fall semester
