CSULB begins searching for new permanent provost

The search is on for a new provost at Cal State Long Beach to replace Gary Reichard, who resigned in February after being appointed as executive vice chancellor and chief academic officer of the Cal State University System.

The provost is the chief academic officer for the university and is in charge of all instruction. He works with the faculty and other divisions on campus to develop the university’s vision.

In an e-mail sent to the student body March 28, President F. King Alexander wrote, “We are moving forward with regard to the identification of a new provost and a committee for this important national search has been selected.”

The committee is comprised of faculty members from several CSULB colleges, an Associated Student Inc. representative and a community representative. Although the committee has not yet met, members have ideas about what characteristics the new provost should have.

Margaret Merryfield, chairwoman of the Academic Senate, said she wants a provost who understands shared governance and will work with the faculty. She said she would like the new provost to have strong academic credentials and understand CSULB and its mission.

Interim Provost Dorothy Abrahmse, who is not on the committee, said the new provost needs to have integrity, be committed to the university and be able to work well with a lot of different people.

“ They have to be pretty good at personal relations,” Abrahmse said.

Charles Noble, chairman and professor in the political science department said the provost needs to have an intellectual vision and must be able to lead. He said the new provost must “understand what it takes to be excellent teachers, what it takes to be excellent students and [how] to combine those roles.”
