ASI fee survey not done in years

A survey designed to find out how students prefer their Associated Student Inc. funds be distributed has not been conducted in years because the process is outdated, according to the ASI treasurer.

According to the ASI Bylaws, one of the treasurer’s duties is to “conduct a survey of all returning students in order to establish a student preference for the distribution of associated student funds. This survey will be used as a guide for the board of control.”

The survey is supposed to take place during fall registration.

The ASI treasurer, Zaira Tinoco, has to conduct the survey under the Bylaws, but said the survey hasn’t been conducted in a few years because the method of carrying out the survey is outdated.

“ This was back when you had to wait in line to register for your classes,” Tinoco said.

Tinoco plans to bring back the survey and to update the method of surveying students. The new survey will comply with the new method of registering online.

The Senate is in charge of the Bylaws and senators approve or reject them. Tinoco “will work with one of [the senators] to revise and make sure [the duty] is consistent and have it passed.”

She plans to conduct the survey online by e-mailing the student body.

“ Students are responsive to online surveys,” Tinoco said, explaining how current ASI surveys, like the recreation center survey, have been successful.

The survey will ask students how they “prefer to spend discretionary funds” and will include “current issues that come up over the semester,” Tinoco said.

Some key topics past surveys asked about were the distribution of funds for student organizations, Program Council and the Isabel Patterson Child Development Center.

Tinoco said the survey will ask about the key topics, but also include other relevant topics to the student body.
