Zaira Tinoco

Tinoco to help provide internship connections, learning support

ASI treasurer candidate Zaira Tinoco is running for office again. As the current treasurer, she said has accomplished a lot and she can use her experiences to accomplish more next year.

“ I will be an advocate for students,” said Tinoco, a senior political science major. “I will address their issues and am open to all input, and will act accordingly to what students want.”

One of those accomplishments was accompanying former Cal State Long Beach President Robert C. Maxson to Sacramento and lobbying on behalf of students to increase support to California State University campuses.

That resulted in the CSUs getting a Doctorate in Education program.

An important issue for treasurers is the constant increase in student fees.

“ Student fees are definitely a tax on students,” Tinoco said. “The state legislature sees us as an easy target, but if we can approach them in new and creative ways, hopefully we can come to a long-term agreement.”

Students, like senior communications major Natasha Le, look for specific qualities when choosing a treasurer.

“ I want to have my questions answered,” Le said. “I want to be able to know where my tuition money is going because I’m frustrated with the increases every semester.”

That question is on Tinoco’s agenda. She hopes to make the budget accessible to students at all times by posting it online. That way, she said students can get feedback and know what is going on.

A recreation center is also a future possibility. Tinoco said it would be beneficial for students, but said they should not have to pay for it. There are other means to pay for it, she said, such as alliances with corporations and athletic companies.

“ It is similar to The [Walter] Pyramid,” Tinoco said. “Frog’s is in The [Walter] Pyramid and they pay a small fee, so if we could get something like that in the rec. center, it would definitely help with the cost.”

Besides being the current ASI treasurer, Tinoco was treasurer for the Law Society, last years’ president for the Law Society, a senator for the College of Liberal Arts from 2003-05, and a president’s ambassador.

If reelected, Tinoco will show students all the benefits they can get out of ASI. She hopes to provide students with a link to internship positions that companies will recognize so they can get good jobs after they graduate.

Additionally, she wants to increase funding for student organizations, provide learning support for student employees, help ASI meet students’ needs, and come to a long-term agreement for student fees.

Tinoco said she believes she is the right candidate because of the commitment she has provided and gained.

Alan Gonzales, a junior marketing major, thinks a good candidate should be honest, trustworthy and have good communication skills.

“ We want someone who can be trusted, someone who will voice our concerns properly,” Gonzalez said.
