Angelina Ortega, a communications major, said she is running for Associated Students
Inc. vice president to make college life for students an easier, more meaningful
experience.
Ortega was a part of La Raza Student Association, Hispanic Student Business Association
and radio DJ for KBEACH from 2001-03. She currently works for the ASI business
office.
Student organizations and ASI “make college experience fun and meaningful.
It’s a learning experience,” she said.
She wants to increase ASI funding because it has decreased with budget cuts.
“
The services ASI offers are still here despite budget cuts,” Ortega said,
and she wants to keep those services open to students.
She plans to bring in funding from outside sources.
“
I know people in public relations that can help get sponsors for [ASI],” Ortega
said.
Ortega wants to promote ASI more to get students involved and will advertise
the services offered more if elected.
“
I’m familiar with ASI because I work in their business office,” she
said. “I know the documents and the funding.”
She said with her knowledge and outside connections she can help keep ASI and
other organizations going strong.
Ortega also raised money for her campaign on her own. She was able to raise $450
by getting local restaurants and bars to sponsor her.
With her networking connections, she has organized a campus event to support
her campaign that will take place today in the Southwest Terrace.
Ortega also plans to make student life better by doing something on the educational
level for students. She wants to push for updated editions for research in the
library.
“
The No. 1 reason we’re here is to learn and study so we can go out and
get a job,” Ortega said.
Updating the library will be beneficial for all majors, she said.
Oretega also wants to bring back the missing computers to the Horn Center. In
addition, she wants to make academic advising and tutoring services more accessible.
She wants to make sure students are getting the help they need when they go to
academic advising to ask for help. Academic advising is there to help students,
but they are unavailable she said and she wants to do something about that. Ortega
also plans to find funding for tutoring services because they are expensive.
She said she realizes students need tutoring to get ahead in their classes.
Ortega also plans to bring in political awareness by trying to get California’s’next
governor candidates to speak at CSULB.
