Studio art major Shefali Mistry is one of five presidential candidates campaigning
for the upcoming Associated Students Inc. elections.
Mistry is a transfer student from Riverside Community College (RCC) where she
said she believes she gained the necessary experience to be ASI president.
“
My experience at a community college and at a university allows me to see
things from the outside, which is something different,” Mistry said.
While at RCC, Mistry was the Inter Club Council director for one year, the
chief of staff for one year and the president of the art club.
“
The first thing that needs to be done is to restructure right away. I think
the ASI needs to become more efficient and really start to serve students,” Mistry
said.
One of the main problems with ASI is communication, the lack of communication
between students and ASI starts with the lack of communication between the
executives and the AS Senate she said.
Mistry’s main goal is lowering the cost of attending Cal State Long Beach.
International student and third-year computer science major, Kwang Jae Lee
said he pays close to $6,000 a semester.
Everything is great with the school and the ASI, the real problem is the cost
of school,” Lee said. “I just think more should be done to accommodate
international students.”
Besides setting a goal to lower the cost of attending CSULB, Mistry hopes to
improve academic advising, so that students can communicate with their advisers
in order to make educated decisions.
Also, Mistry hopes to improve the graduation and retention rates. She said
the current rates are not good because communication and academic advising
is poor and there are not enough advisers for all the students needing help.
“
A president should always have good communication skills and the drive
to want to do good for all students,” said third-year nursing major
Kathleen Rivera.
“
I think it’s possible that all candidates have good qualities including
the current president, but the only thing students should be concerned
about is what the candidates actually want to do,” Rivera said.
Mistry
said once voting time comes around students
should educate themselves before voting.
“Making
an educated decision will be the best thing
students can do—instead of voting
for friends,” Mistry said.
