Juancarlos Mariano, candidate for Associated Students Inc. vice president,
wants “to make sure students know who the vice president is, what he
does and how he can help directly.”
Mariano is a finance and management major currently serving as Senate pro-tempore,
or the back up to the vice president, and senator for the College of Business
Administration. He is a part of the American Marketing Association, Hispanic
Student Business Association and Human Research Management Association. He
was also secretary of Internal Affairs of the presidential cabinet under former
ASI president Danny Vivian from 2003-04 and is the co-founder and chairman
of the Alternate Transportation Parking Committee.
Mariano said he thinks a lot of false promises have been made in ASI and said
his platform is attainable because of his current position and relationship
with the administration. He said not only does his platform have feasible goals,
but he addresses many of the issues facing students. The No. 1 issue is student
fees. He believes a true lobbying effort is needed to fight student fees.
“
The vision of the CSU system is to be affordable and successful,” Mariano
said. “Affordability is not being achieved.”
He said it is time to “step in and make a difference” by bringing
in more lobbying with a couple thousand students.
Mariano will support and strengthen Greek, academic and cultural organizations
because he said they are essential to a diverse campus.
He said he believes there is an organization that appeals to every student
on campus and he wants to re-implement the student activity hour on campus.
The student activity hour would make it so every day of the week between noon
and 1 p.m no classes would be in session. This would enable organizations to
meet during that time instead of at night like they currently do.
Another way to make students more involved on campus is to establish programs
for commuter students, Mariano said.
He wants to establish a committee that will ask students for their input on
issues and address those issues.
“
I want to give them a reason to start caring,” Mariano said.
Getting students involved on campus and also giving them better services is
a part of Mariano’s plan. He wants to collaborate with administration
departments like Enrollment and Food Services.
“
I want to work on a different process to get things done,” Mariano said,
explaining he has not gone through a semester without hearing complaints.
He wants to work on a more efficient process of getting things done and said
his management classes have taught him a lot about efficiency and better planning.
Mariano also wants to strengthen the Senate by supporting senators to achieve
their goals.
“
If I don’t agree I will still help,” he said. “It’s
my duty to fully represent every organization.”
Student interests are his concern. He said ASI represents students and that
is what he will do.
“
As Maxson would say, [students] are our No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 priority,” Mariano
said.
