Duenser to help Latino minorities, abolish ASI

Senior political science student and senior Media Board member Sean Duenser is running for president of Associated Students Inc. after observing student government meetings from the sidelines since September 2005.

Duenser’s platform focuses on improving resources for minority students, helping students make the transition from college to the real world, and reforming the relationship between ASI and the student body.

Duenser said many minority students on campus feel ignored and there is a lack of resources for them, especially Latinos. He said he plans to help minorities on campus gain access to better resources, and he hopes to increase the retention rates for students of color on a “white-dominated campus.”

Duenser said he would like to see a Latino publication on campus and a center of excellence and retention for Latino students. He also said he wants Latinos to be more involved with funds the university gives them.

“ One-quarter of the campus is Latino, and there is money on the table for them,” Duenser said. “Who knows better how to achieve success than the students themselves?”

Duenser said he wants students to be more prepared for life after college.

“ I like to ask [people], ‘What do you plan on doing after school?’ Most people don’t know what to do,” Duenser said.

Duenser also said the campus should be opened to accommodate the students who want to attend Cal State Long Beach. He suggested the campus could create more classes in the evening and on Fridays. He also said Brotman Hall could cater to students more by staying open later.

Duenser said the university should respect the remaining few acres of Puvungna, the burial ground on campus, and suggested building huts and teaching classes on the location.

He also said the proposed recreation center is completely worthless and the school already has facilities.

Duenser would also like to see reforms within ASI. He noted misused stipends, budgets and the neglect of students as key issues that require attention. He said he sometimes doubts the necessity of ASI.

“ This is supposed to be a progressive senate, but I haven’t seen it,” Duenser said.
