Meckell V. Alexander

Alexander looks to five-point improvement plan

Senior health care administration student Meckell V. Alexander is running for ASI president.

While Alexander does not have experience with the student government at Cal State Long Beach, he was an active participant in the Associated Students of Grossmont College, Inc., in El Cajon, outside San Diego. He served as a general member of the student government before becoming director of Fundraising. From there, Alexander went on to serve as secretary of Student Legislation and as student body vice president before graduating from Grossmont College in spring 2004.

Alexander said he is running for president to serve the students and give their voices back to them. If elected, he has a five-point plan for his role in the student government. First he wants to promote diversity on campus, increase awareness and the need for recruitment and retention. He also wants to bridge the gap between the administration, the student body and ASI; bring accountability back to ASI; and provide more resources for the student body.

Alexander is also concerned about student fee increases.

“ I do not agree with the [increases],” Alexander said. “However, I know they are applicable and necessary.”

Alexander said he would like to see students become more powerful in their involvement with campus affairs.

He he would like to unite all the ASI groups within the California State University system and said they would be a force to be reckoned with and would give students more power.

Alexander said he would love to see a recreation center, and if elected, would try to get plans together for it, but doesn’t make any promises.

Alexander said he believes in respecting Puvungna and would like to see the university work on developing a more cohesive system in relation to the burial ground.

Alexander said he thinks the opportunity to attend classes at CSULB should be given to all students.

“ I don’t like the idea of having to compete to get into classes,” Alexander said. “But I understand the necessity [of the competition].”
