While he was traveling to Kansas for another gig, I managed to snag an interview
with Haste the Day’s drummer Devin Chaulk.
Even with the setback of having their old singer, Jimmy Ryan leaving the band,
Haste the Day pushes on with new singer Stephen Keech for their Europe and U.S.
tour with Bleeding Through. You can imagine the longtime fans might have a problem
with the new singer but Chaulk, 26, just said, “The response to Steven
has been awesome.”
Chaulk continued to give praise to Keech, “We just had our first show with
him last night in the U.S. and the kids have really responded well.”
With metal-core/screamo becoming more popular in today’s mainstream music,
Haste the Day embraces the new fan base. Chaulk explained it was great to see
more kids becoming aware of hardcore music.
“ It is very exciting and it has been opening doors for new bands,” Chaulk
said.
He also expressed a strong sense of duty to the music and the fans.
Haste the Day is a wonderfully talented group that has broken down barriers and
come through with a mix of emo-core and major influences from Zao and Killswitch
Engage.
Now on a full U.S. tour with Bleeding Through, Every Time I Die and Between the
Buried and Me, Haste the Day will promote its new album, “When Everything
Falls,” and hopefully gain a larger fan base.
The group has already reached over 60,000 of fans on MySpace and Chaulk said
the Web site has been a great tool in reaching new people.
Their new record is a splendid mix of rock, hardcore and metal riffs. Haste the
Day is a Christian group and their religious influence comes out in its songs, “When
Everything Falls” and “If I Could See.” Even if you are not
a religious person, you cannot deny the talent and emotion this group brings
forth in their new album.
Haste the Day has been on many other major U.S. tours, including touring with
Strung Out. However Chaulk doesn’t mind touring with a band that is so
different from his.
“ I love touring with bands that are of a different style,” he said.
Chaulk spoke fondly of his fans, which he referred to as the kids and said hanging
out with them on tour is one of his favorite things. Lastly, Chaulk spoke fondly
of his band and the most inspirational person in his life, his father.
Haste the Day will continue its U.S. tour and will be back in the Southern California
area in early April.
