Movie • Kate Beckinsale and Scott Speedman star in the action-packed sequel “Underworld: Evolution.” Screen Gems

‘Underworld: Evolutions’ meets expectations

The creative vision of director Len Wiseman has once again shown us his fantasy world of vampires and lycans, or werewolves as they’re more commonly know.

The centuries it long feud continues in “Underworld: Evolution,” with the major exception of having a hybrid vampire/werewolf wanting to take over both species of immortals.

The sequel picks up exactly where the previous movie left off, settling any unanswered questions from the first film. This action-packed film takes us into a completely different world where we can only hope Selene, the main character, can save the world.

After discovering she was betrayed by her mentor, Viktor, (Bill Nighy), Selene, (Kate Beck-insale) along with Michael (Scott Speedman), the werewolf/vampire hybrid, must now search through the past to discover what really started the vampire/lycan war.

Beckinsale gives her character more emotion in this film compared to the last. Instead of being cold and unemotional, she is allowing herself to fall in love and cry when tragedy strikes. Speedman also has to deal with the changes of going from your average Joe to a very powerful hybrid of both lycan and vampire.

In the first film, Michael and Selene had an obvious attraction toward each other but it ended without any action on either’s part.

In the sequel, Michael and Selene share a bond that continues to grow as the film progresses. Beckinsale and Speedman’s on-screen chemistry is definitely worth watching.

In the previous “Underworld” film, the vampire elder Viktor was destroyed and now there is only one vampire elder left, Marcus, played by Tony Curran, who was accidentally made into a hybrid of both vampire and lycan. Marcus is now more powerful than any pervious vampire or lycan and he wishes to use his new found power for complete control of both the lycans and the vampires.

“Underworld: Evolution” is action-packed with intense fight scenes and graphics. The special effects of the sequel are way more advanced than the first, with computer generated images of lycans in place of intricately detailed werewolf costumes. The first

“Underworld” gave us the feeling of being in the dark and living beneath the surface. “Evolution” does the same, except with more scenes outside and dealing with the fear of being caught out in the sunlight.

“Underworld: Evolution” has far exceeded my expectations as compared with the previous film. Beckinsale powerfully brings the idea of what it is like to be a vampire to the big screen.

I recommend, watching the pervious film first; otherwise you may have to explain a few things to your friends during the movie. I enjoy the fact that the second film continues where the first movie left off, so that we don’t have to use our imaginations to guess what happened in the time lost between movies.

“Underworld” is a definite must for any of you who enjoyed “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” or appreciate movies with classic monsters.”
