Tennis • Beach Tennis has been awarded an Intercollegiate Tennis (ICT) Association National All Academic Team Award in recognition of their 3.4 grade point average.  Beach Tennis was the only Big West Conference school to receive the award. These awards piggy-back the Beach Tennis team again taking the LB State Athletic High Team GPA Award for the sixth time in nine semesters.  The ICT award is given each semester amongst all the varsity sports.

Language • Claude Goldenberg, a professor of teacher education at Cal State Long Beach, appears on the PBS series “Becoming Bilingual: The Challenges of Teaching English Language Learners to Read” currently being aired around the country.  It can be seen on http://www.readingrockets.org/tv/bilingual.php. “Becoming Bilingual” is broadcast as part of a series titled “Reading Rockets,” produced by the Washington, D.C.-based public television station WETA.

Library • CSULB will host its seventh annual Summer Children’s Literature Institute, which features award-winning children’s authors and illustrators, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday on the fifth floor of the University Library. The all-day event features award-winning children’s authors and illustrators who share their work and ideas with participants, providing a unique and creative professional development experience for teachers to improve their ability to integrate children’s literature into the classroom.

Baseball • A pair of 49er baseball players, infielder Evan Longoria and pitcher Jared Hughes, found themselves in starting positions Saturday as they were named to the East Squad for the 43rd annual Cape Cod League All-Star Game, broadcast live on College Sports Television.

Science • South Korea’s cloning pioneer, Hwang Woo-suk, and his team have successfully cloned a dog for the first time. The dog of choice is an Afghan hound, a resplendent supermodel in a world of mutts, but ranked by dog trainers as the least companionable and most indifferent among the hundreds of canine breeds.

Business • Adidas said Wednesday it will buy shoemaker Reebok for $3.8 billion, giving the company about 20 percent of the U.S. market and the potential to better challenge leader Nike Inc. on its home turf. The deal brings together David Beckham and Missy Elliott, under contract to Adidas, and Reebok’s shoe line with 50 Cent’s G Unit logo, endorsed by such NBA stars as Allen Iverson and Yao Ming.
