The Disabled Student Services (DSS) program at Cal State Long Beach has recently
received a donation of $107,000 from former Governor George Deukmejian and
his wife, Gloria.
The DSS program has decided to put the money in an endowment account and each
semester they will use $2,500 for a scholarship called the George and Gloria
Deukmejiam Memorial Scholarship for Students with Disabilities.
The scholarship will be geared toward graduate students who have chosen to
continue their education at CSULB and will be awarded to one student per semester.
David Sanfilippo, director of DSS said, “Most of our students are on
fixed incomes and the importance of other incomes is huge.”
The money is intended to go to tuition expenses but students can choose to
use it however they think it will be most helpful to them in pursuing their
continued education.
Not only does the DSS program provide scholarships for
students, but it also helps with registration, interpreting, reading, test
accommodations and academic advising.
The DSS program also provides Braille books and readings for disabled students
These services make life for the 1,000-plus students with disabilities who
attend CSULB much easier, and the new scholarship will help even more.
In 1993 Deukmejian was the chair of an endowment committee and was able to
help the program raise $1.5 million. |
