The Long Beach State track and field squad displayed their talented personnel as freshman Charles Lewis finished in the top three in sprints and junior Charlene Deardorff ended the meet with two titles on Saturday.

"This meet always brings out the best performances, and I think we performed better than we have this season," Head Coach Andy Sythe said.""I think it really opened a lot of our athletes' eyes as to what they could accomplish, and that is what I'm excited about."

On the men's side, the 49ers finished second behind UC Irvine, 185-183. UC Santa Barbara finished with 154, followed by CS Fullerton with 120. On the women's side, LBSU's total of 189 finished second behind UC Santa Barbara's 202. CS Fullerton finished third (135), followed by UC Irvine (94).

Lewis ran a time of 10.65 to take the 100-meter event, and also ran a time of 21.45 to win the 200-meter dash. Lewis was also on the 4x100-meter relay team that finished first and the 4x100-meter relay team that finished second.

Deardorff ran 11.73 to win the 100-meter, which was an LBSU-best. She was also part of the 4x400-meter relay team that set a match-record with a scorching time of 3:46.38. She finished second in the 200-meters with a time of 24.45, and was on the 4x100-meter relay team that led the whole race but was unfortunately disqualified.

Although freshman Patrice White primarily runs the 100 and 200-meter dash, White came up big as he finished second in the 400-meter event with a time of 56.01. Sophomore Emily Forsythe finished first in the high jump with 5'8.75", junior Holly Lipscomb topped the competition in the long jump with 18'2.25", and freshman Kim Heinz finished first in the javelin with 152'7".

Other top finishes included sophomore Donald Carter who took first in the triple jump with 14.54m, and junior Haben Hagos finished second in the same event with 14.46m.

LBSU are in action on Wednesday as they travel to Azusa where they will compete in the California Decathlon-Heptathlon at Mt. SAC.
