The
Long Beach State men's volleyball team fell
to BYU by a score of 3-2 after they lost
a 2-1 match lead on Saturday night at the
Smith Fieldhouse in front of 2,413 fans.
The
49ers' six-game winning streak came to an
end as LBSU fell to 15-8, 9-7 in the Mountain
Pacific Sports Federation, while the Cougars
improved to 15-8, 10-6 MPSF. The game scores
were 34-36, 30-22, 26-30, 30-23, 15-10 in
favor of BYU.
The
Beach started strong in the first set, largely
due to a .367 attack percentage (25-7-49).
LBSU was ahead 27-25 until BYU went on a
4-1 run to take the lead. The Cougars had
four different game-point opportunities
(29-28, 30-29, 31-30, and 33-32), but could
not finish off the 49ers as LBSU squeaked
by with the win. Senior opposite/middle
backer Yassir Sliti led the way for The
Beach with six kills.
In
the second set, BYU capitalized on LBSU
hitting errors to take a 21-14 lead. And
the Cougars never looked back as they won
the set 30-22 to tie the match at 1-1.
The
Beach came back to take the third set, 30-26.
The game was close throughout as the score
was tied 11 different times. But the 49ers
were able to pull away to a 27-23 lead and
both teams just traded points the rest of
the way. BYU struggled on offense in the
game, hitting a meager .080 (11-9-25).
But
BYU would come back to take the fourth and
fifth sets to take the match. The Cougars
won game four on a LBSU service error, and
finished of the 49ers 15-10 in the final
set.
Sliti
led LBSU with 19 kills, junior outside hitter
Robert Tarr had 16 kills and four blocks,
junior setter Tyler Hildebrand recorded
58 assists and six digs, and sophomore middle
backer Teddy Liles added 10 kills of his
own in the loss for the 49ers.
