Long Beach State drowns ASU, Indiana Hoosiers

The Long Beach State women's water polo team fought to keep their winning streak alive as the 49ers demolished their opponents in Arizona this past weekend.

Starting the road trip off on Saturday with a win over Indiana, The Beach's domination lasted into the game Sunday as they defeated Arizona State. With an overall record of 12-3 and a 4-0 record in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, the team had a superb weekend as they got right down to business as soon as they stepped off the bus early Sunday.

No. 3-ranked Long Beach State decimated The Hoosiers 15-6. Not wasting any time, the ladies showed what they were capable of doing when they jumped to a 5-0 lead. Keeping a steady pace, the 49ers scored two more goals before the half was up and held Indiana to only one goal.

Beginning the third quarter with a 7-1 lead, The Beach were relentless as they picked up four more goals before the fourth quarter.

Pushing The Beach ahead with two goals apiece was junior Cassie Azevedo, junior Alison Braden, junior Marina Canetti, senior Drue Wawrzynksi, and sophomore Christina Wensman. Picking up one goal each were junior Lindsey Machado, Dayna Wawrzynski, senior Jessica Levin, senior Laura Branch and senior Sarah Vejar.

After the victory on Saturday, the 49ers stayed focused as they took down Arizona State on Sunday. Azevedo contributed three goals in the first half and gave LBSU a 3-1 lead at the half.

Starting the third quarter, it was still anyone's game, but the 49ers would not stand for this uncertainty and drove it home with a three-goal rally. Junior Tara Campell started the rally for LBSU scoring a 5:32, followed by junior Alison Braden's shot at 4:17, which gave them a 5-1 lead.

This was not enough for the ever-persistent 49ers. In the last seconds of the third period, Canetti found the net, helping to secure the game pushing the lead to 6-1.

Senior goalie Bri Hawkins had nine saves in the game and allowed only two goals in the last quarter. Braden slipped in one more goal before the end of the game as LBSU defeated Arizona State 7-3.

The team returns home this weekend riding a four-game winning streak. The next games are Friday, Saturday and Sunday at The Campus Pool.
