Heading
south on the 405 freeway, the Long Beach
State tennis team stopped at UC Irvine en
route to a 5-2 victory Friday afternoon
at the Anteater Tennis Stadium.
The
sun peaked out long enough to let some sun
shine onto the courts, and the 49ers took
full advantage, winning five-of-six singles
matches to take home the victory.
With the win, the No. 67-ranked 49ers improved
to 5-4 on the season, while the No. 75-ranked
Anteaters fell to 4-6.
The
day did not start out as well as the 49ers
hoped, as they lost all three doubles matches, giving
the point to the Anteaters heading into
singles play.
At
court one, Anna Bentzer and Inna Agababian
of UCI proved to be too tough for Nicole
Bouffler and Sandra Rocha as they lost their
first doubles match of the spring season,
9-7, after seven consecutive victories.
At court two, 49ers Alanah Carroll and Rachael
Porsz were defeated 8-3 by Hui Leow and
Becky Bernhard. At court three, UCI's
Jayme Hu and Lisa Shih were able to outlast
the tandem of Nicoletta Ratiu and Stephanie
Bengson 9-8 in an exhausting match.
After
losing the doubles point, The Beach was
able to ricochet back and win five of the
six singles matches.
Things
started off sluggishly, but livened up quickly
in singles play, with wins at courts two,
three, four, five and six.
The
sole singles loss came at court one, where
49ers senior Bouffler was defeated by Bentzer
in three ruthless sets 7-5, 2-6, 2-6. The
rest of the 49ers were victorious in their
matches.
At
court two, LBSU's Bengson bounced back after
losing her first set 5-7, to win 6-4, 10-4
over Mijic. At court three, Rocha
won 6-0, 7-6 over UCI's Agababian.
At court four, junior Carroll pulled out
a three game win 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 over Bernhard.
At courts five and six, The Beach's Porsz
and Ratiu each won easily 6-2, 6-2 over
their opponent.
