When things are not going well sometimes you have to take a step back in order to move forward. That seems to be the case for the Long Beach State women's tennis team, after dropping two games last weekend to Sacramento State and Pacific. Returning home, the 49ers put their best foot forward as they were victorious over UC Riverside last Thursday at The Campus Courts.

The No. 66-ranked 49ers defeated the visiting Highlanders by a score of 6-1. With the win, The Beach improved to 4-4 this season and 3-1 in Big West play. The Highlanders dropped to 2-5 on the season and are 0-3 in the Big West.

LBSU swept all three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. Nicole Bouffler and her partner, Sandra Rocha, topped the Highlanders' tandem of Michelle Beyronneau and H.R. Espiritu, 8-5 at court one. With the win their doubles record improved to a flawless 7-0 this season.

LBSU's Stephanie Bengson and Racheal Porsz kept things going, as they were victorious against Casey Cross and Catrisha Cabanilla at court two. At court three, Alanah Carroll and Nicolleta Ratiu soared past UCR's Collette Chau and Eri Yoshimoto 8-1.

"The number three doubles did a good job closing the match, leading the way for the rest of the team," LBSU Head Coach Jennifer Hilt-Costello said.

The Beach were not done there, as they won in singles play as well. Hilt-Costello was impressed with her team's win.

"We did a good job of taking control of the points, playing offensively and consistently."

At court one, No. 85-ranked Bouffler, squared off against Cross at court one. Bouffler proved to be too much for the UCR player, as she came out on top, winning 6-3, 7-5 in two tough sets.

On court three, LBSU's Rocha won in straight sets over Espiritu 6-1, 6-0. At court four, Carroll contributed with a victory over Cabanilla in three tough sets 6-2, 4-6, 12-10. At court five, Porsz also won in two straight sets, defeating UCR's Yoshimoto 6-3, 6-1. On court 6, Ratiu won by default.

The Highlanders earned one point on Thursday, which came at court two. UCR's Beyronneau proved to be too much for Bengson as she was defeated, 6-2, 6-2.

The 49ers will be back in action on Friday as they travel to UC Irvine to play the Anteaters at 1:30 p.m.
