Co-winner of the Big West conference pitcher of the year award last season, senior Marcel Torres, performance on the field this past weekend was strong evidence for another successful campaign.

Torres went 2-0 with wins over UC Davis and St. Mary's at the Aztec Invitational in San Diego. She pitched 11 innings in the tournament, striking out 17 batters, walking only one and recorded a minuscule ERA of 0.82.

"Marcel is definitely one of our two top pitchers this season," Head Coach Pete Manarino said. "She's versatile and makes an impact both as a pitcher and at other positions as well."

Batters might as well have been swinging at golf balls pitched to them since softballs seemed too small to hit. Opponents against Torres only recorded four hits and posted a collective dismal batting average of .108.

Torres is a big part of a 49er pitching staff that only gave up 12 runs in the five games, while posting a 2.73 team ERA in the tournament.

Not only did she shine on the mound over the weekend, Torres also contributed on offense by hitting .429 and driving in two runs.

Torres, who majors in sociology, came to LBSU as a junior transfer last season from Mt. SAC (2002-03) and UCLA (2000-01).

At Mt. SAC, she received Southern California MVP honors and was awarded the State MVP pitcher.

And in her stint at UCLA, Torres posted a .356 batting average.

"Marcel is a good leader and a lot of younger players look up to her," Manarino said. "She tells the other players on the team to be confident and the game will come to you."
